2-0

Waynesboro defeated Broadway 7-3 in a non-district contest Friday night. The Little Giants held the Gobblers to one goal in the first half while posting four goals in the same stanza.
The Little Giants’ Eddie Juarez went one-on-one with Gobblers goalie Daniel Richards to put his team on the board. Kyle Wright, on a pass from Sawyer Janes, smashed the ball for the second goal.
The Giants (2-0, 2-0) went undefeated in the Southern Valley District last season.
“Right now we are missing five starters,” said Giants coach Bill Meicke. “Considering that, I think we did very well tonight. We always look ahead to do better. We have a tough week ahead of us.”
The Giants will play Harrisonburg on the road Tuesday and will play Turner Ashby at home on Friday night.
Before the Giants hit the road, they were able to build momentum before the new week.
Waynesboro continued to pound Broadway’s defense and catch breaks. The Giants scored on a penalty kick and later Hugo Fernandez sliced the ball at the 2:00 minute mark for a 4-1 lead before the break.
Broadway started to turn the game around in the second half after Fernandez found the back of the net for a 5-1 lead.
The Giants defense started to leave holes and Broadway’s, Jeremy Phillips scored for his team’s second goal of the game and teammate Luke Bradshaw added another goal at the 10-minute mark. The Giants added insurance with a goal from Janes and Jose Cruz, who had a duel role of keeper and forward.
Still Cruz was not thrilled about the game slipping away in the second half.
“Our defense needs to communicate more,” Cruz said. “But I’m glad that we were able to add more goals. We did alright tonight.”
Cruz dismissed that his team became over confident after their lead 5-1 lead.
“It’s all about communicating and we were not doing that in the second,” Cruz said. “It’s not over confidence.”
