2-0

Waynesboro defeated Broadway 7-3 in a non-district contest Friday night. The Little Giants held the Gobblers to one goal in the first half while posting four goals in the same stanza.
The Little Giants’ Eddie Juarez went one-on-one with Gobblers goalie Daniel Richards to put his team on the board. Kyle Wright, on a pass from Sawyer Janes, smashed the ball for the second goal.
The Giants (2-0, 2-0) went undefeated in the Southern Valley District last season.
“Right now we are missing five starters,” said Giants coach Bill Meicke. “Considering that, I think we did very well tonight. We always look ahead to do better. We have a tough week ahead of us.”
The Giants will play Harrisonburg on the road Tuesday and will play Turner Ashby at home on Friday night.
Before the Giants hit the road, they were able to build momentum before the new week.
Waynesboro continued to pound Broadway’s defense and catch breaks. The Giants scored on a penalty kick and later Hugo Fernandez sliced the ball at the 2:00 minute mark for a 4-1 lead before the break.
Broadway started to turn the game around in the second half after Fernandez found the back of the net for a 5-1 lead.
The Giants defense started to leave holes and Broadway’s, Jeremy Phillips scored for his team’s second goal of the game and teammate Luke Bradshaw added another goal at the 10-minute mark. The Giants added insurance with a goal from Janes and Jose Cruz, who had a duel role of keeper and forward.
Still Cruz was not thrilled about the game slipping away in the second half.
“Our defense needs to communicate more,” Cruz said. “But I’m glad that we were able to add more goals. We did alright tonight.”
Cruz dismissed that his team became over confident after their lead 5-1 lead.
“It’s all about communicating and we were not doing that in the second,” Cruz said. “It’s not over confidence.”

1-0

STAUNTON — It might have been the opening game of the season, but the Waynesboro boys' soccer team has its offense in midseason form.

The Little Giants scored early and often on their way to a convincing 8-2 Southern Valley District victory over Robert E. Lee on Tuesday night at Montgomery Hall Park.

It took less than four minutes for Waynesboro to get things cranked up. Sawyer Janes sent a pass to Hugo Fernandez, who tipped the ball past charging Lee keeper Robbie Hite for the opening goal.

During the 13th minute, Stuart King ran down a pass on the left sideline and centered a pass to Janes, who found the back of the net to give his team a 2-0 lead.

The Leemen momentarily slowed the momentum two minutes later. Chris Bandy scored off a cross from Dustin Burdick, pulling Lee within a goal.

But three goals over a 13-minute span helped Waynesboro take control. An Eddie Juarez header got things started again during the 22nd minute. Janes would add his second score after converting on a give-and-go with Kyle Wright. King would then make it 5-1 with a goal assisted by Jimmy Negrete.

"We were really aggressive, switched the ball really well and possessed really well," said Janes, who would finish the game with a hat trick after a second-half goal. "I'm looking forward to this year."

Just before halftime, an Alan Lopez goal off a feed from Gabe Van Cleave would help the Leemen close the deficit to 5-2, but that was as close as they would get.

Scores by Wright and Juarez, sandwiched around Janes' third goal, helped Waynesboro put the game away during the early moments of the second half.

"In our preseason, we didn't do too well," said Little Giant coach Bill Meicke. "We were looking to get focused, come out and improve in our finishing. I think the guys were up to that challenge. We've still got room for improvement."

The Leemen will try to bounce back when they play another early-season district match at Stuarts Draft on Friday.

Waynesboro will play its home opener Thursday against Western Albemarle.

WHO WANTS TO GET SMACKED NEXT?

Just a playlist to snack on.

1. Knock You Down- Keri Hilson feat. Kanye West & Ne-Yo
Kanye is back in the rap game, Keri is still sexy, and Ne-Yo is quickly becoming the hottest vocalist in the industry. Due to the catchy hook it's hard not to love this song. Tune in to your local FM station because it's definitely coming soon, I just hope it doesn't get played out.

2. Blood Bank- Bon Iver
This track comes off of Bon Iver's follow up EP to For Emma, Forever Ago.
"Well I met you at the blood bank
We were looking at the bags
Wondering if any of the colors
Matched any of the names we knew on the tags"
Kind of weird, but the flowing riffs and unique ruggedness of his voice make up for it.

3. Soft Shock- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
I can never stay away from Karen O. Check your local record store on March 31st for the new album It's Blitz! (That is, if you have a shop left. Support the artists, buy CDs!)

4. Jay Rock- All My Life (Remix)- Jay Rock feat. The Game, Gorilla Zoe, & Busta Rhymes
All I can say is hear the beat. I like the fresh sounds of Jay Rock. And everyone likes hearing some real shit.

5. Swagger Like Us (Remix)- Clipse feat. Ab-Liva
3/4 of the Re-Up Gang reunite for one of the standout tracks from Road To Till the Casket Drops. Stay tuned for an official review to the mixtape in a few days. I could go for hours quoting this song, but here's a taste.
"Don't get caught up in your feelings because,
you just Original Fakes and I am the KAWS.
If you follow fashion you can follow my bars
If not get your hypebeast on, follow the blogs."
